The scandal over the 1993 dismemberment of John Wayne Bobbitt and the trial of Lorena Bobbitt will be featured in a special two-hour “20/20” documentary on Friday night.
“The Bobbitts: Love Hurts” will air at 9 p.m. on ABC and features a new interview with John Bobbitt, according to a news release.
The documentary will also include interviews with several key players in the case, including local Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert and the two doctors who performed the surgery on John Bobbitt, Dr. David Berman and Dr. James Sehn.
On June 23, 1993, Lorena Bobbitt used a knife to cut off her husband’s penis. She drove a short ways from their residence near Manassas Park and threw the penis out the car window and into an empty field by a 7-Eleven.
Lorena Bobbitt’s trial in 1994 would draw national attention to the Prince William County courthouse. She was eventually acquitted due to temporary insanity.
The couple divorced in 1995 and Lorena Gallo now manages her own nonprofit group and lives in the Haymarket area, supporting women who have been victims of domestic violence.
“Obviously the incidents from 1993 have had a profound effect on my life, with regards to the media, it has allowed me to form the platform [on speaking about domestic violence] that I have chosen and to continue the work that I choose to do,” she told InsideNoVa in an interview last spring.
