Four Weddings and a Funeral is a British classic but, as Romesh Ranganathan put it, it’s quite straight and white.
When the sequel was announced as part of Comic Relief 2019, we were told that all our favourite stars (including Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson, Andie MacDowell, James Fleet and Kristin Scott Thomas) were back, and that it would be Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! star Lily James tying the knot.
‘But who is going to be the lucky fella?’ we all thought. Well, we learned on Friday (March 15) that her character was marrying none other than… Alicia bloody Vikander!
Yup, One Red Nose Day and a Wedding gave us a heartwarming gay twist. And viewers were living for it:
In the 25 years since the first film, Atkinson’s Father Gerald is still as rubbish as ever and struggled with the proper wording of a same-sex ceremony to hilarious effect.
We also got some more excellent sign language banter, and a touching mention of Scarlett, the character played by the late Charlotte Coleman, who died in 2001 of an asthma attack.
As well as the Four Weddings sequel, Comic Relief also delivered Jennifer Saunders’ parody of the Mamma Mia! sequel, and a Bodyguard skit that brought Keeley Hawes’ Julia Montague back from the dead.
