Captain Marvel launched with a massive debut at the domestic and international box office.
The film, starring Brie Larson in the titular role, earned an estimated $153 million domestically and an additional $302 million internationally for a worldwide total of $455 million, according to Box Office Mojo. This makes Captain Marvel the second-highest MCU solo film debut since Black Panther opened to $202 million domestically last year.
Captain Marvel’s domestic opening weekend is the 18th highest of all time, just behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which debuted to $155 million in 2016. Worldwide, Captain Marvel now ranks as the sixth-highest opening weekend of all time and the second-highest ever for a Marvel movie, behind only Avengers: Infinity War’s $640 million worldwide opening weekend.
Captain Marvel’s $153 million opening weekend is the seventh highest for a Marvel film:
- Avengers: Infinity War ($257 million)
- The Avengers ($207 million)
- Black Panther ($202 million)
- Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191 million)
- Captain America: Civil War ($179 million)
- Iron Man 3 ($174 million)
- Captain Marvel ($153 million)
- Guardians of The galaxy Vol. 2 ($146 million)
- Iron Man 2 ($128 million)
- Thor: Ragnarok ($122 million)
Captain Marvel also has the distinction of being the female superhero movie with the biggest opening weekend, eclipsing DC’s Wonder Woman, which opened to $103 million domestically and $125 million internationally for a worldwide total of $228 million. The Marvel film’s massive worldwide opening of $455 million also arguably makes it the highest-grossing female-led worldwide opening ever, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens is led by Daisy Ridley’s Rey and racked up a massive $529 million globally during its opening weekend.
