Is Avengers 5 the end of the road for the original Black Panther? Chadwick Boseman made a big splash in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during his first standalone film, Black Panther, in 2008. Since then, Boseman reprised the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and seemed poised to lead the next generation of superheroes in the MCU. Boseman is slated to return to action for Black Panther 2, but there is some speculation that his final outing will be in Avengers 5.
Is Boseman leaving the MCU?
Fans can expect Boseman to reprise his role as T’Challa in Black
Panther 2, which is set to hit theaters in 2022. We do not know if Boseman
will enjoy any cameos in other projects, but inside sources claim that his days
in the MCU are numbered.
According to We Got This Covered, sources close to Marvel say
that the studio wants Letitia Wright’s character, Shuri, to take up Black
Panther’s mantle in the MCU. If that happens, then Boseman would obviously be
the odd man out.
Marvel has not confirmed the rumors, but the source believes that the transition will be complete following the events in Avengers 5, which is rumored to be a New Avengers project.
Boseman is fully expected to be a part of Avengers 5, which will likely include Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd).
If Avengers 5 really is the end of the road for Boseman,
the actor will have portrayed the hero in a total of six movies. For reference,
this is close to how many times Chris Evans suited up as Captain America.
Is Boseman unhappy about ‘Black Panther 2’?
Black Panther proved to be a huge success at the box
office, netting Marvel well over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales and
becoming the studio’s first movie to snag an Academy Awards nomination.
Although the franchise seemed ready to lead Marvel into a new
chapter, Boseman’s involvement in Infinity War and Endgame was
very small. Fans were obviously sad that they didn’t get to see much of
Boseman’s character, the actor is reportedly unhappy with the storyline in the
An inside source claims that Boseman does not like the direction Marvel is going in Black Panther 2. The studio has not said much about the plot, but Boseman reportedly dislikes the idea of Shuri taking his character’s mantle.
The actor apparently does not want to leave the MCU anytime soon,
and is reportedly contracted through Avengers 5, so having another
character take over his position kind of gets in the way of that plan.
That said, Boseman has not commented on the rumors. For all we
know, Marvel is not planning on promoting Shuri and Boseman is content with how
things are going.
Marvel to get more diverse in Phase 4
When it comes to diversity, Marvel is planning on making the MCU much more inclusive in Phase 4. Although this approach has created some issues with Doctor Strange 2 and Captain Marvel 2, Black Panther producer Nate Moore is looking forward to telling different stories in the sequel.
In a recent interview, Moore talked about how the character of
Black Panther does not belong to a particular actor. This opens the door for
other characters to pick up his mantle.
“One thing I like to tell Ryan [Coogler] is, the Black
Panther is a mantle as much as it is a person, so we’re not restricted by
anything, because the truth is, there’s a lot of different ways to go back to
Wakanda and have a good time and continue to explore the themes that made the
first film so resonant,” Moore explained.
Moore did not mention Shuri by name, but it certainly sounds like
they are open to having her become the next Black Panther.
Director Ryan Coogler is set to helm and write Black Panther 2, which is the only
Marvel film that has been confirmed for 2022.
New leak teases Phase 5 movie
Aside from Black Panther 2, Marvel has been very quiet about its plans for Phase 5. Fans expect the studio to move forward with several projects, and an inside source recently revealed that Captain Marvel 2 will also come out in 2022.
Details about the Captain
Marvel sequel have not been released. We do know that Brie Larson is
returning to reprise her role and that the plot might have something to do with
a Skrull invasion. Beyond that, little else is know about the project.
Avengers 5 will reportedly feature a new group of Avengers led by Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel.
