Laura Prepon has spoken candidly about the moment she had to make the decision to terminate her second pregnancy.
The 40-year-old star of Orange Is The New Black opened up about the devastating decision she had to make, in her new guide to motherhood, You and I As Mothers.
Laura fell pregnant for a second time in 2018, after having her first daughter, Ella, with husband Ben Foster a year before.
Unfortunately, this time there were serious complications.
Laura said that when she had a sonogram at 16 weeks, there was a serious issue highlighted, which was a condition called cystic hygroma.
This is an abnormal development of the lymphatic vascular system during embryonic growth.
Laura said: “Our neonatal specialist told us the brain was not growing and the bones were not growing.
“We were told the pregnancy would not go to full term and that my body was at risk carrying any longer.”
It was at this point that Laura had to face the reality of the decision she had to make.

She said: “Ben held me as I cried. We had to terminate the pregnancy.”
Laura said she struggled with self-loathing, something that had haunted her since teenage years, and the termination brought that all back to her.
She continued: “To get to the second trimester and then be told this awful news, I felt like a failure.
“I felt like my body had failed and failed having another baby. The whole cycle of what’s wrong with my body came back.”
The doctors tried to comfort her in saying that it was moments like this that it was easy to “punish yourself”.
“I was scared that somehow the abuse I put my body through could have been part of the reason things went wrong,” she says. “Doctors confirmed it wasn’t but in those moments it’s easy to punish yourself.”
The healing process was long for Laura but with the support of her husband and stories shared by her close friends, she soon realised she was not alone.
They began trying for another baby, with Laura saying: “We’re going to go on this journey again and bring our daughter a sibling.”
A baby boy was born at the end of February and Laura said: “It made me so thankful for the blessing we have now.
“It put into perspective what a blessing it is to have a healthy child.”
