We all needed some good vibes in 2020, because there sure weren’t many of them to go around. Thankfully, 2020 also marked the premiere of Ted Lasso, a comedy series starring Jason Sudeikis which essentially served as a living, physical, 10-episode-long good vibe. It was one of the best new shows of the year, and a genuinely great watch.
Now nominated for a pair of Golden Globes (and likely to be a major contender at next year’s Primetime Emmys), Ted Lasso is all about the titular coach (played by Sudeikis) moving to the United Kingdom to coach an English premier league team called AFC Richmond. The hook: he is a football coach, but not the kind that plays in the premier league. No, Lasso is an American football coach, coming across the pond for a new job after coaching football at Wichita State. He knows nothing about this football.
But the show turns out to be even more than just its wacky premise. Where fellow great shows like Seinfeld or It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia get laughs on the awfulness of their main characters, Ted Lasso goes the other way. The characters, led by Sudeikis’ relentlessly positive and good-natured Ted, are generally good people, doing good things, and leaving a good taste in our mouths when each episode’s end credits roll. It’s not mushy gushy junk—there are still many genuine laughs throughout the series—but it’s just the kind of show to make you feel nice when the rest of the world, well, you know how it’s been.
OK, so how can I actually watch Ted Lasso?
Ted Lasso is an Apple TV+ original, meaning you can only watch the show on the Apple TV+ platform. If you don’t subscribe already, there’s good news: if you sign up, there’s a 7-day free trial. After that, Apple TV+ is only $4.99 a month, so you’re not exactly breaking the bank.
If you wind up liking Ted Lasso, it’s worth noting that Apple TV+ also has another comedy series that we highly recommend in Mythic Quest, which was created by and stars Always Sunny creator Rob McElhenney. Worth noting!
Are there more episodes coming?
Good news: yes. Not only has Ted Lasso been renewed for Season 2 (which is currently in production in London), but the show has been such a success that Apple TV+ preemptively ordered Season 3 back in October.
Season 1 debuted in mid-August of 2020, so we’d expect the new season to debut around that same time, late summer 2021. Hopefully by then, we can have good show vibes in a good vibe, nearly post-covid world—our fingers are crossed.
