Back in 2src14, author Emily St. John Mandel probably didn’t anticipate her then just-published novel Station Eleven becoming really, really relevant. But the science-fiction story about how humanity fares right before and after a global pandemic which effectively kills half the population…isn’t that far-fetched anymore. Now, an upcoming television adaptation hopes to bring us all a bit of comfort with the post-apocalyptic premise.
Starring Mackenzie Davis (of Terminator: Dark Fate), Himesh Patel, and others, the show follows a group of survivors who live as traveling performers and eventually encounter a mysterious cult. In the aftermath of the pandemic, two of the survivors, Kirsten and Jeevan, must grapple with their past and look toward to the future.
Fans of other population-altering shows like The Leftovers may find interest in Station Eleven, which was created by The Leftovers’ alum Patrick Somerville. The shows are a stark contrast from one another, the former is marred in a grim tone and supernatural intrigue, while the latter is, well, the complete opposite. Still, there’s sure to be similar ruminations on how to deal with incalculable loss, something we’re all actually dealing with right now. For those of us who want our television to reference real world events, Station Eleven is certain to hit home as a way for media to help us process everything we’re going through.
As an HBO Max release, the show isn’t a drop all at once binge, instead the show will have multiple of its 1src episodes drop over time, even forgoing the once-a-week classic format of cable television. It’s vastly different than other streaming platforms’ formats, and a little hard to wrap your head around. Here’s the official release schedule for Station Eleven.
