Netflix’s murder mystery Who Killed Sara? has been a huge hit for the streaming platform ever since it was first released in late March. This Mexican drama follows the Lazacanos, a criminal family involved in sex trafficking and murder, who may be responsible for the death of Sara Guzmán. It has it all: betrayal, murder, infidelity, and forbidden love. It’s no wonder that fans can’t stay away. With each season revealing more questions than answers, no one should be surprised if a season three is indeed on the way, aiming to answer all those questions. After all, Season 2 was announced just five days after Season 1 premiered. And, with Who Killed Sara? becoming Netflix’s most successful foreign language series in the U.S, it’s would make a lot of sense for this Netflix telenovela to be around for a long time.
One small surprise about Who Killed Sara? isn’t the outrageous storylines or the unexpected plot twists, but, rather, the success of such a show that has little to no big names attached. And, while a show doesn’t necessarily need Hollywood’s most known actors to become successful, it surely doesn’t hurt to have a fan favorite or two in a new TV series.
Alex Guzmán, the brother of Sara who sets on a revengeful path against the Lazacons for murdering his sister, is played by Manolo Cardona. And, unless you’ve seen a lot of Mexican dramas or watched his small stint on the drug crime TV show Narcos, you wouldn’t recognize him immediately. But, his recognizability—or lack thereof—has no bearing on his portrayal of angry, frustrated, and grief-filled Alex. As Mónica Marie Zorrilla from Variety noted, “This is the first time Cardona has entered the global stage, front, and center, in a series that millions are viewing.” And, despite his inexperience, his performance is powerful enough to draw fans in and present an engaging, twist-turning murder mystery.
See below for the rest of the main cast of Who Killed Sara? and who they portray in this Netflix show. (And warning: Spoilers ensue)
Manolo Cardona—Alex Guzmán
Cardona plays the Alex Guzmán on the show. And, let’s just say he plays Alex well. Despite only having a few acting credentials—Narcos and The Snitch Cartel—he’s amazed fans with his gut-wrenching scenes in Who Killed Sara?.
Alejandro Nones—Rodoflo Lazcano
Venezuelan actor Alejandro Nones plays Rodolfo, the eldest Lazcano and Sara’s former boyfriend who appears to have murdered her (at least in the beginning episodes). A known model, Nones has appeared in a few Mexican telenovelas with Who Killed Sara? being his biggest role to date.
Carolina Miranda—Elisa Lazcano
Perhaps the best-known performer on Who Killed Sara?, Carolina Miranda is a Mexican actress known for her work in soap operas and telenovelas. While a bit unknown in the American Hollywood scene, Miranda has performed in numerous plays, reality TV shows, web series, and scripted films for Mexican audiences. She has even won awards such as Best Actress in Los Mexico’s Awards and The Produ Awards as Actress of Revelation. She plays Elisa Lazacono, the youngest child and Alex’s love interest.
Ximena Lamadrid—Sara Guzmán
A graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Artist, Ximena Lamadrid is a new and upcoming actress. She portrays Sara, the mentally unstable deceased teenager harboring a load of secrets. Lamadrid, while new to the acting scene, has managed to blow fans away with her poker faces and silent but sound expressions. She has a few upcoming projects, according to IMDb.
Eugenio Siller—José María “Chema” Lazcano
Eugenio Siller portrays Chema Lazcano, the disgraced middle child in a same-sex relationship. Siller first got his start acting in commercials and musical plays until he found success playing a blind man in a Mexican soap opera. Since then, he’s built up a versatile career playing challenging characters, modeling, and even starting a singing career.
Similar to her other co-stars, Fátima Molina is also a little unknown on the American acting scene. She has a few acting roles in Mexican dramas such as Diablero or La Doña. In Who Killed Sara?, she stars as Clara, Chema’s surrogate and Marifer’s little sister.
Ginés García Millán—César Lazcano
The manipulative and vengeful César Lazcanois is played by Spanish actor Ginés García Millán. Millán’s performance as the Lazacnos patriarch is so powerful that sometimes you forget he’s even acting. A producer and actor, Millán has equal theatre and film experiences.
Claudia Ramírez—Mariana Lazcano
Claudia Ramírez embodies the cunning and devious Mariana Lazcano, the matriarch of this criminal family and the mother of Chema, Rodolfo, and Elisa. Ramírez’s performance as innocent and gentle Mariana is so convincing that fans initially assume César is the show’s villain until later episodes reveal Mariana as the true mastermind. Throughout her 20-year career, Ramírez has appearede in numerous films and TV shows, including Streeters and The Idol.
Juan Carlos Remolina—Sergio Hernández
What better man to play the sadistic Sergio Hernández, César’s right-hand man, than a Mexican actor with over thirty years in the business? Juan Carlos Remolina plays Sergio, and he plays him well. It’s no surprise that this actor has a few awards—including an Emmy—under his belt.
You might recognize Héctor Jiménez from the 2006 comedy film Nacho Libre. But his days of playing wrestlers are over. In Who Killed Sara?, Jiménez stars Elroy, the adopted son and loyal follower of Mariana. Other than starring in this Netflix drama, you can find Jiménez producing films or acting as a theater clown.
Litzy surprised us all with her portrayal as mentally unstable and grief-filled Mafier, Sara’s former best friend and Clara’s sister. Who would’ve expected Marifer to have “killed” Sara? Surely not fans, as Litzy’s performance of Marifer was just that convincing—no one expected her of being a murder. If you want to see more of Litzy’s roles, you can find her in Quiéreme Tonto or Al Otro Lado del Muro.
Luis Roberto Guzmán—Lorenzo Rossi
Luis Roberto Guzmán plays Lorenzo, Chema’s long-term partner who is a lawyer. Most of Guzmán’s work consists of Mexican telenovelas including El Pantera.
Ana Lucía Domínguez—Sofia
This actress got her biggest break by playing Sofia, Rodoflos’s estranged wife, and Bruno’s mother. Although her role is limited in the series, Domínguez managed to enamor fans with her character’s skillful thinking and willful grit.
Bruno, Sofia’s son and Rodoflo’s stepson, is portrayed by Iñaki Godoy, an actor with limited experience. Similar to his on-screen mother, Who Killed Sara? is Godoy’s biggest break. But, while he’s just arriving on the acting scene, his inexperience has no bearing on how well he portrayed the confused and sad Bruno.
